Safety First: Top Tips for Staying Safe as You Cycle

 In Bike Safety

According to the most recent study out of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, bicycle crashes are decreasing in Minnesota. In 2017, there were a total of 801 reported bicycle accidents throughout the state. In 2018, that number fell to 609 accidents.

In addition to a decrease in accidents, serious injuries have also decreased. In 2017, 738 cyclists were injured compared to 578 cyclists in 2018.

Even though bike crashes have begun to decrease, it’s still important to prepare should the worst-case scenario occur. Read below to learn about the safety tips that we follow and share with our family and loved ones, so you can protect yourself during your commute or Saturday cycling outing.

Tips for Steering Clear of Bike Crashes

1. Beware of Heavy Travel Periods

Around 80% of crashes in Minnesota occurred during the weekdays of Monday through Friday, with 31% happening during the rush hours of 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm. If you must commute during these times, stay alert. It’s easy to fall into autopilot when you’re traveling the same road each day.

2. Use Existing Biking Infrastructure

Minnesota is home to some new advancements in biking infrastructure, especially around the Twin Cities. Even if you must go a few blocks off your route, stick to dedicated bike lanes and paths for the best protection.

3. Wear the Correct Safety Gear

Always wear a helmet when cycling. This alone can help minimize devastating head injuries if you’re a victim of a bike crash. We also recommend wearing reflective clothing so motorists can see you. Place lights and reflective strips on your bike for additional visibility.

Let’s Hope We Continue to See Bike Crashes Decline

It’s up to all of us to follow safety guidelines and the rules of the road set forth by state law. In doing these things, we sincerely hope we continue to see declining numbers of bike crashes, not just in Minnesota, but across the country.
